French Women Don't Get Fat: The Secret of Eating For Pleasure by Mireille Guiliano
coverPublished by Knopf
Reviewed by Rhia Perkins

The French Paradox is probably not news to any of us, but Mireille Guiliano’s French Women Don’t Get Fat lays down a solid plan for the average North American to throw away a lifetime of unhealthy eating habits and adopt a new way of eating that will make them happier – and probably thinner too.

Aside from an initial few weeks of austerity to help adherents get to a point where they feel “good in their own skin” – a weight that has little to do with medical charts or fashion models –, the book suggests there’s no foods we should ever feel compelled to avoid. Instead, Guiliano suggests seeking out the highest-quality versions of everything we love, and enjoying them in moderation, balancing them with things we know are healthier. She suggests drinking more water – and just moving around more instead of feeling compelled to slave away at the gym.

authorThe language of the book is friendly and charming, almost like a conversation with a wise older friend. It’s peppered with delightful-sounding recipes and colourful anecdotes – not to mention bright blue subtitles, and cute chapter heading illustrations. The frequent references to Guilliano's employer (champagne maker Veuve Cliquot) in the second half are a little unsettling though!

French Women Don't Get Fat
might not change your life… but it could make you think twice about the way you eat. And the way you diet
