This is the story of a young girl as she grows up in the shadow of her little sister. Bronwyn DeGroot feels as though she is unnoticed and unimportant in her mothers eyes compared to Carey, who has cerebral palsy and requires constant attention. She still adores her sister as much as anyone in the family but feels jealous at times of the attention Carey gets. She has a weird sense of humour and ends up alienating a lot of her friends. But Carey seems to be the only one who gets her--and they share a bond only sisters can.
As Bronwyn grows up, her sister Carey gets sicker, but she doesn’t seem to notice; as with most teenagers, she is caught up in her own life. This is a story of a typical girl struggling to become a young woman, but with a lot more complications to deal with.
It took a while to read this book. I think a book needs to grab you from the get-go, and this one didn’t do that for me. I would say at times I felt slightly lost because the book seemed to jump ahead months at a time and left a lot to be assumed. In the end it was a good story. I do not, however, think I will try another of Julia Roorda’s stories as I am not a fan of this writing style.
Wings of a Bee is a book that I am sure young readers would enjoy. They could associate with our heroine and sympathize with her struggle and perhaps be less mindful of Roorda’s style of jumping ahead or leaving things to the imagination.
