Naughts and Crosses trilogy (Naughts and Crosses, Knife Edge, Checkmate)

These novels are called teenage fiction but they are so much more. Relevant to today’s political and social context, this trilogy takes its reader through a heart-wrenching portrayal of two people driven together by love and pulled apart because of their colour and race.
Sephy Hadley is a cross, who happens to hold a privileged position in society. Her true love, however, is a naught and is called Callum McGregor. Together they are one, but society condemns this match and “mixing.” The two are pulled apart by forces they cannot control and are forced to make decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones.
The trilogy follows their relationship and their futures whilst dealing with issues of womanhood, racism, prejudice, and motives to turn towards political extremism. These novels are realistic and moving accounts of how ignorant world politics affect everyday people of all social classes.
The second and third parts of the trilogy are dedicated to Sephy and her struggle to make it in a hostile multicultural world. Blackman is a literary genius and has made intelligent judgments about today’s world for adults, as well as for children. Perhaps the world leaders and politicians of today should read this masterpiece.
