On December 6, 1989, fourteen women were murdered at L’École Polytechnique in Montreal. They were murdered because they were women.
Statistics Canada indicates that 51% of Island women have experienced violence.
First mourn, then work for change!
Many Island volunteers pinned ribbons to over 30,000 information cards. Please wear this purple ribbon on and around December 6 to commemorate the 15th Annual National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. If you can, please make a donation in your community to an organization actively working to end violence against women and children.
Violence Against Women Has No Age Limit
Family violence is a fact in many older women’s lives...
Nearly a third (30%) of homicides in Canada from 1978 to 1997 in which the victim was a woman aged 65 or older were committed by a spouse or former spouse of the victim. Other perpetrators include sons (15%), daughters (3%), and other family members (10%). Statistics Canada
Abuse of women in later years may
- be a continuation of long-term partner abuse
- begin with retirement
- begin with the onset of a health condition
- occur in a new intimate relationship
- be committed by adult children or grandchildren
Older women may experience a variety of abuses including
- psychological abuse in the form of harassment, verbal aggression, intimidation, insults, threats, humiliation, hurting her pets, and various ways of enforcing isolation
- financial abuse including taking her money or withholding money for food and other basic essentials
- physical abuse in the form of hitting, pushing, grabbing, kicking, or choking
- neglect (especially if she has mobility or other significant health problems
